*** About Ospreys: The osprey, also known as the sea hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a large raptor, reaching more than 60 cm in length and 180 cm across the wings. Known for their distinctive nest-building, ospreys often reuse the same location for several years, building large stick nests in high places near water. These birds are notable for their dramatic hunting technique, whereby they dive towards the water's surface from up to 30 meters in the air to snatch fish with their taloned feet. Ospreys are highly adapted to their aquatic diet, with reversible outer toes and barbed pads on the soles to help grip their slippery catch. Widely regarded as indicators of a healthy environment, ospreys have made significant recoveries in areas once impacted by pesticide use.
